Xiao Wen Xu (b. 1991) is a Chinese-born Canadian artist in Toronto. She specializes in watercolour and mixed media painting and holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Waterloo (2018). Xiao Wen’s unique perspective is painting Canadian flora through Chinese painting methods, such as simplifying forms and leaving negative space. Her artistic practice is influenced and inspired by her love of nature and colour. She depicts the shape of flowers, leaves, and landscapes realistically while using fluid and bold imaginary colours. Her paintings create a surreal and fantastical world that bridges and encourages conversations with Canadian reality and her Chinese roots. She has presented her work in solo shows in Toronto and group shows in Hamilton, Los Angeles, and New York City.
