Tanya Besedina is a Latvian-Ukrainian-Canadian sculptor based in Toronto, working primarily in translucent porcelain. Her practice explores transformation, memory, and the sacred feminine through tactile forms that embody both fragility and resilience. Originally trained as a fashion designer in Ukraine, she discovered her true medium in clay—a material she describes as both fragile and eternal. Drawing from her heritage and experience of migration, she transforms personal and collective memory into symbolic, organic forms. Her current research explores Parian porcelain as both material and metaphor—connecting the luminous fragility of clay to contemporary questions of empathy, perception, and care. She is the 2025 recipient of the Craft Ontario Helen Copeland Memorial Award in Ceramics and winner of the Made with Laguna International Competition. This year, The Artist Project exhibition will be supported and granted by Ontario Arts Council and Laguna Clay company.
