Sandra Iafrate

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Booth 809, I-16

Main

Sandra Iafrate’s work explores temporality and identity through mixed-media paintings, including portraits, landscapes, and still life. Deep personal sentiments fueled Iafrate’s creative process as she incorporates vintage materials, such as maps, books, and textiles, reminiscent of her past and imagined history. Her work involves thoughtful layering of elements, revealing palimpsests and textures within charcoal drawings and paintings. The artist says that her applications of materials are applied with a sense of wonder and longing. She aims to honour objects of the past and their imagined histories, giving them new life through inventive narratives. The portraits are layered with imagined lives and the thoughts of characters. Landscapes celebrate protected environmental spaces, while still-life paintings and an installation exhibit praise food from the garden in a Baroque-like composition that emulates a lost way of life. Within this body of work, she has included immersive maximal live installation, inviting us into an imagined kitchen of the past and calling for reflection on our current way of life. At booth 809 and I-16, Iafrate offers a tactile aura of the past, representing time-honored imagined journeys of people, places, and things.
