Patrick Skals is an award-winning artist from Toronto. His paintings are intended to have one rethink and challenge mass cultural perspectives. By tackling psychocultural topics around contemporary culture and its impact on our mental health, one is asked to approach the subjects with honest introspection. Inspired by the beautiful decay of city walls, paper is utilized to create an impactful textual element. Applying pages from Psychology textbooks aligned to the intended message, the audience is primed to engage in meaningful discourse. Revealed throughout his works is the signature equation (x-1)?/xo. Using a denominator xo symbolizing love, and placing it in a mathematical equation (math being stereotypically difficult) it challenges the notion of self love versus the unconditional love we show others. Authenticity is at the heart of each painting, feeling as impulsive as they do calculated. The audience is invited to relate to the vulnerability of an artist battling themself in a rapidly changing environment. Patrick’s work can be found at juried shows, commercial galleries, and private collections throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
