After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the Université de Montréal in 1999, Julie Desmarais has spent the past 25 years developing a professional art practice rooted in close observation of the natural world. Her work is shaped by extensive travel throughout Canada, where she seeks out landscapes largely untouched by human presence. Deeply inspired by the beauty and vastness of the Canadian territory, she aims to capture the emotional resonance of these environments in her paintings. Working in oil on large-scale canvases, she creates highly detailed, realistic landscapes that possess an evocative, subtly surreal quality. Born in the Laurentians, Quebec, Desmarais has lived and worked in Montreal for over 30 years. In 2004, she received a scholarship and presented a solo exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides. Since then, her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and featured in contemporary art fairs across Canada and the United States. Her paintings are held in public and private collections both nationally and internationally.
