b. Lagos, Nigeria, My practice investigates the intricate relationship between culture, commerce, and identity. Focusing on themes of neocolonialism and the globalized beauty industry, I explore the historical and contemporary significance of coiffure within African societies. Through painting, collage, and textile-based works, I examine the distribution networks of hair products, the ingredients, and the impact of these systems on individuals and communities. By incorporating ethnobotany into my life, I aim to highlight the importance of traditional knowledge systems and promote sovereignty through sharing herbalism and wellness practices. My work seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities of globalization and its impact on African cultures. Drawing inspiration from my Lagos roots, my art explores how nostalgia and a sense of belonging intertwine with the narratives of coiffure as a reflection of social and economic structures.
