Claire McNamara is an artist currently based in Halifax. Born in Toronto, she holds a BFA from the University of Western and most recently received an MFA from NSCAD University in 2024. Her studio practice resides in the intersections of painting and dance, through embodied gesture and fluid material choreography. Referencing lived experiences, her work investigates the concept of ‘girlhood’ through the lens of an intersectional feminist methodology to question and critique the existing hierarchies within the canon of art history, and subversion of taste and skill. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the Art Bank of Nova Scotia and the University of Western Ontario, and has been exhibited internationally across galleries, artist-run centres and non-traditional spaces based in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, New York City, and London.
